Frequently Asked Questions

Your questions answered

What is music therapy?

Music therapy is a psychological therapy in which music and sound are used alongside, or instead of, words. Therapist and client work together towards therapeutic goals, and building a trusting relationship is a big part of the process. In the UK, music therapists are registered with the HCPC.

Who is it for?

Music therapy can benefit people of all ages, from young children to older adults. It can support people with autism, learning disabilities, additional support needs, dementia, anxiety and other mental health or emotional difficulties, and many more.

Why music therapy?

Music can reach people in ways that words sometimes can’t. It can be especially helpful for people who find it hard to express themselves verbally, offering a way to communicate, connect with others and explore feelings.

What is a session like?

Every session is shaped around the person’s needs and interests. It may include playing instruments, improvising music together, singing, songwriting, listening to music or moving to music.

Do I need to be musical?

Not at all. Music therapy involves a lot of improvisation, playing and singing, which doesn’t need any musical skill. Anyone who feels music could be a way to express themselves is welcome.

How long does it last?

Individual sessions are 45 minutes (or 30 minutes for a short session), and group sessions last 1 hour. Sessions usually take place weekly, as consistency is very important for building the therapeutic relationship.

How do I get started?

Simply get in touch for an informal conversation at no cost. We can talk about your needs, and whether music therapy could help, before deciding on next steps together.

Antonia is an HCPC-registered music therapist, bringing over 10 years’ experience of working with children and adults through music.

Before qualifying as a music therapist in 2022, she worked as a music and piano teacher in Greece, Spain and Scotland. She has worked in mainstream and special schools, music schools, hospitals and supported living homes. These roles gave her a deep understanding of each person’s individual needs, and inspired her to explore further what music can bring to people’s lives.

Since qualifying, Antonia has worked freelance with children and adults with complex learning disabilities, additional support needs and autism, helping them to reach their full potential. She brings a gentle, empathetic approach, staying present and attentive to what a person communicates, through words, sounds, gestures and movement.

Antonia is originally from Greece and is a mother of two. She speaks English, Greek and Spanish.
